During Mayday Mayday 2015, a three day art festival in Ghent, I was present every day to perform a drawing experiment.
WHAT: Visitors were encouraged to 'do something' with small square pieces of white paper. They were completely free, creativity was encouraged. Some drew a picture, some wrote a text, some spit their chewing gum on it, some ripped it apart... After every drawing, I selected one or more of these 'submissions', and integrated them compositionally and/or thematically into a drawing on light brown wallpaper. After finishing one, I pinned it to black boards next to my post. Visitors were informed about the setup by a simple text layed out on my working table. Instead of rushing and integrating every single paper into a drawing, I took my time, and filtered the ones that didn't interest me out. Those people should have just made something more exciting. Lesson in life for the uninspired? WHEN: Mayday Mayday 2015 was held April 29th until May 1st. TOOLS: Ink, pastel, water color, saliva, pencil. Out of the 26 drawings I made during the festival, I selected nine representational examples. |
